Kerry XV play Italian visitors

Amatori Unione Rugby Milano came to Tralee on Saturday 5th March on spring tour of Ireland. Having played Fermoy on arrival 0n Thursday, the plan was to play Tralee RFC on Saturday afternoon. As Tralee had to play Corca Dhuibhne in a delayed U14 West Munster Cup semi-final, Killarney RFC with assistance from Killorglin RFC stepped forward to play as a combined Kerry U14 XV.

For a team of mainly U14s with a few U15s, the step up to play an academy team composed mainly of U15s was huge. The Kerry XV conceded 3 early tries due to the greater power of the Italian lads.

Our lads soon learned that they could not afford to bring the ball into contact, and took the opportunity to move the ball when possible. Having gone 15-0, we put width on the game and got the ball out our speedsters on the wing. We scored two quick fire tries to pull the score back to 15-12. Milano scored a fourth try, but we were able again to notch another 2 tries to lead 27-22 at half time.

I can only surmise the Italian squad got a talking to at half time and they upped the effort in the second half scoring 4 tries to none. The Killarney, Killorglin and Tralee players kept up their efforts until the end, but were worn down by an older, stronger team.

The games was played in brilliant sunshine. Thanks to Noel for reffing, and to Tom Cronin of Tralee for organising the pitch and the after-match entertainment. Thanks to all the players of Killarney, Killorglin, and Tralee RFCs for taking part.

Forza ragazzi!
